The Rapport Project
Premise:
The original intent of the project was to build a "Communications Device," a
device that one could perhaps want to place on one's desk. This device would provide
communication to another person or to a group of people. This communication would be at
the subconscious level. An example of this communication is holding hands at the movies.
Normally, attention is given to the movie, and the information communicated by holding the
other's hand is subtle, subconscious, and does not affect the main task of engaging in the
movie.
With no restriction placed on technology, the following devices mainly adhere to the
original intent, with a few minor tangents. And now...
Communications Devices:
- Two Person Communication
- Windmill
-- Two wooden windmills that act as one. Ellen and Joe both have a
windmill on their desks. When Joe gets bored or stressed, he rotates the blades of his
windmill. On Ellen's desk, her windmill rotates at the same rate as Joe's rotation. If
Ellen is in her office and notices the windmill rotating, she may wish to interact with
her windmill. If Ellen and Joe are both trying to rotate the windmill in different
directions, they can feel the force feedback of the other's rotation. In this way, Ellen
and Joe can be aware of the other without placing a concentrated attempt on the matter.
- Digital/Analog Clock version
-- A clock with analog hands which act in the
same manner as the windmill described above. However, as one plays with the analog hands,
the LCD face displays digital hands which keeps the time as the analog hands are moved
around. The clock recognizes which direction is up and displays the time, hands, and
numbers correctly.
- Heating Handheld Object
-- An egg shaped wooden handheld object that comes in
pairs. If one is held, nothing happens. However, if two are held at the same time, they
both heat up and the heat dissipates slowly.
- Mobile Keyboard Connector
-- Two computer keyboards are aware of each other.
When only one is being typed, nothing happens. When both are being typed, an overhanging
mobile starts rotating.
- Humming Wedding Bands
-- A lot of time, when married people fidget, they play
with their wedding bands. In this scenario, the two wedding bands are aware of each other.
When one ring is rub, nothing happens. However, when both are rubbed, they emit a sound
only the owners can hear.
- Pins Box
-- Two pin boxes. The ones people always hold up to their face to
get an imprint. As a pin is pressed in one, the equivalent pin on the other is pushed out.
- Baby Crib - Room Divider
-- As baby plays around in her crib and touches the
bars of the crib, the room dividers light up depending on which bar is touched.
- Cilia Row
-- A brushed metal tube with wavy cilia like fibers protruding from
the top. One can play with the cilia and leave the cilia in some particular state
(standing in whatever direction). After being idle, the Cilia Row switches states with
another Cilia Row.
- Coins
-- A small wooden tray with a coin placed on top. One can flip the coin
as many times as one wants. However, when one isn't looking, the coin switches location
and orientation with another Coins device.
- Bamboo Stick with Rings
-- A bamboo stick with metal rings bound through the
center of the bamboo stick. As with the above, one can play with the orientation of the
rings. However, when one isn't looking, the states of rings on the Bamboo Stick switch
with another.
- Multiple People Communication
- Altruistic Candy Dispenser
-- Two gumball machines. When one puts a coin in
one and turns the knob, candy comes out on the other machine.
-- People listen to their own music as background in
their office. Everyone has a theme song. As a person walks into the building, that
person's theme song is queued and played next on everyone's music list.
- Picture Aware Picture Frame
-- The picture frame is aware of the picture is
it displaying. When one touches a person in the picture, a communication is sent to the
person being pointed at.
- Light Compounding Picture Frame
-- A picture frame that changes color as
light hits the frame. However, the changes are compounded with others' picture frames and
lighting condition.
Others
Dynamic Picture Frame -- Can be placed on a desk or hung on a wall. Others
can put pictures on this picture frame by sending the picture on the net.
- Distance Lights
-- A row of lights that displays the logarithmic distance of
a person from the lights.
-- A tall glass flower vase with metal semi-circle rings
attached through the center of the vase. The vase can detect the sender of the flowers.
Every time the rings are tossed around, a communication is sent to the sender of the
flowers.
